The French Files - Week 12/2008

by Ludovic Génin

You can't have too much action in the French top 3 at once, and this is why, after a very exciting race last week, Sheryfa Luna, Stanislas and Sinik featuring James Blunt all keep their position. We have some compensation at n°4 with our hot shot debut, Kelly Rowland's funky "Work", one of her biggest hits worldwide. This is her second top 50 appearance overall after her n°6 duet with Nelly, a far cry from her minor success with "Stole" (n°53). She also ties with former band-mate Beyoncé for the number of top 5 hits, as the Queen B got to n°1 with "Beautiful Liar" last year.

Marc Antoine jumps into the top 10 (12-8), and Kylie goes 17-10 with "In My Arms", her first top 10 hit since "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" (the eighth overall, most of them scored in the '80s).

"Everybody Clap", the bouncy debut single for DJ Assad and Maradja gets in at n°25, a Bob Sinclar-y guitar ragga-dance hit with a couple of French lyrics that is not going to change the world but does its job in the clubs. And that's all we ask for...

Rim'K, one third of hip hop outfit 113 is our last entry for the physical side of the charts with "Clandestino" (n°33), a song that has nothing to do with the eponymous Manu Chao airplay classic.

LET'S GET DIGITAL!

This is also a static top 3 in the digital chart, although of a different kind: Yael Naim, Micky Green and Kylie. At n°7, Les Enfoirés go up one, after the broadcast of their show 'Les secrets des Enfoirés', viewed by 11 million people and whose album has just rocketed up the albums chart to n°1 with 129,000 copies sold in only two days. Amel Bent's "Tu n'es plus là" goes 16-8, and at n°10 we have an unexpected worldwide phenomenon. Originally a Leonard Cohen song, "Hallelujah" was revived in the '90s by Jeff Buckley on his only album "Grace", and it is his version that now seems to have gained a classic status, and is now a favourite in the casting part of shows such as 'Pop Idol' or 'X Factor'. The start of a new series of 'Nouvelle Star' has been no exception to it, and like in the UK, sales have soared dramatically, granting Buckley his first chart hit in France, nearly 15 years after his death.

Welsh sensation Duffy is one of the leapers of the week (29-11), along with Cascada (48-30) and Christophe Willem (46-34).

Another British phenomenon, Adele, enters at n°17 with "Chasing Pavements", which bares a similarity in sound with James Morrisson's "You Give Me Something" thanks to the skills of the same producer for both tracks, Eg White, who has also collaborated with Will Young, Beverley Knight, James Blunt, or... Duffy.

David Guetta enters at n°22, Aaron returns at n°23, while below the n°40 mark, Canadian Isabelle Boulay is the only real entry at n°42, an island of new stuff in an ocean of re-entries (Christophe Maé at n°41, Zazie at n°49 and Mika at n°50).
